Sonam Wangchuk's 19-Day Hunger Strike Sparks Urgent Health Concerns
There have been increasing calls urging the famous Indian education activist and academician Sonam Wangchuk to end his 19-day-long hunger strike on account of the serious health condition he now faces. The 59-year-old holder of the Ramon Magsaysay Award—the man who inspired the popular Bollywood movie “3 Idiots”—has lost 9.1 kg weight, is losing muscle tissue, and cannot walk without any support. Wangchuk, along with other students belonging to an organization called Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has launched a protest in New Delhi, calling for educational reforms and the resignation of the Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan following the breach of a major examination in May. Despite the calls from celebrities, politicians, and human rights campaigners, Wangchuk has been refusing to call off his hunger strike, which, according to the ruling of the Delhi High Court, requires immediate medical attention.
